Capstone: Creating ENGN 0032 Introduction to Engineering: Design
Capstone Advisor: Michael Donohue
Human-centered design is a process for problem-solving that emphasizes a deep understanding of human behavior, culture, and context to generate solutions to user needs.
My capstone is a two-semester long project that uses the human-centered design process to create and teach the curriculum for ENGN 0032 Introduction to Engineering: Design. ENGN 0032 is a new introductory freshman course within the School of Engineering (SoE) which will be an alternative to ENGN 0030/ENGN 0031. It is a project-based class focused on applying the design process in the practice of engineering. Along with Professor Donohue and another student, I created the curriculum for the class this spring, and I will TA and teach the class in Fall 2020.
Acknowledgments: Thank you to Chris Bull, Michael Donohue, my friends in Design@Brown, the BDW, this amazing institution, and all those who supported me during this process. You kept me inspired, motivated, and curious, and for that, I am extremely grateful!

"It has been a great pleasure working with you. You have unlimited potential and I will always be available for future mentoring sessions!! I will do anything to support your career. Congratulations!!" --Michael Donohue
"Katya's quiet energy enabled the establishment of Design@Brown, an organization that helps students discover and navigate design opportunities. Her care for craft and attention to detail made her an exemplary chronicler of building wooden boats (and a talented maker of scarf joints), and Katya's willingness to share what she's learned makes her a valued partner in defining a new course that uses design to introduce students to engineering." --Chris Bull
