Capstone:  The Just Transition: A comparison of case studies

Capstone Advisor:  Kurt Teichert

Politics, Philosophy, and Economics (PPE) is the combined study of these three subject areas in order to create an analysis that transcends any of the individual parts. PPE builds on the fundamental notion that core questions in the areas of politics, philosophy, and economics cannot be comprehensively understood nor answered without drawing on the other two.

The just transition refers to the idea that fundamental changes in our economy driven by climate change should be paired with initiatives to support those adversely affected by these shifts. My capstone examines the Dutch transition away from coal during the 1970s in order to determine what lessons can be learned for just transition initiatives in West Virginia.

Acknowledgments: I would like to acknowledge Peggy Chang who has supported me at every step of my Brown career and Kurt Teichert who stepped up for me when other plans fell through.

"It was a pleasure to work with Rainier on his independent project to complete a very unique comparative analysis of just transitions away from coal mining in the Netherlands and West Virginia. Rainier took a very original idea and completed a thorough and interesting paper, and it was always very enjoyable to meet with him in person and remotely." --Kurt Teichert

"Rainier Kortenhorst, Congrats! I thought you'd find this quote from Malcolm X perhaps motivational as you proceed from college: 'You don't have to be a man to fight for freedom. All you have to do is be an intelligent human being.' Best of luck." --Daniel D'Amico
