Trauma Studies, AB

Capstone: Stay, Little Valentine: An Inquiry Into Legacies of Trauma, Sexism, and Resistance at Brown and Pembroke
Capstone Advisor: Beverly Haviland
A highly interdisciplinary field, Trauma Studies moves beyond the typical conception of trauma as a psychological phenomenon to analyze the cultural factors which influence the experience of trauma, the response to trauma, the intergenerational transmission of trauma, and the public memorialization of trauma.
My capstone navigates the history of sexism at Brown University and Pembroke College, which was the women's college affiliated with Brown. In an original podcast and digital archive, I focus on my experiences as a member of The Chattertocks, Brown's oldest historically all-female a cappella group, to question the relationship between history and trauma on the individual, collective, and intergenerational levels.
Acknowledgments: Thank you to Peggy Chang, Beverly Haviland, Jack Wright, my family, and The Chattertocks.

"Congratulations, Sophia! I'm very glad we got to work together this semester. Your capstone project is a rich and deep exploration of trauma and sexism at Brown, and the forms in which you presented your work magnified the power and reach of that work. Well done! and best wishes." --Beverly Haviland
