Thesis: Identifying Trends and Drivers of RI Professional Health Care Spending from 2016-18 Using the RI All-Payer Claims Database (APCD)

Health Economics brings together the fields of public health, economics, and statistics with the goal of maximizing the health of a population given constrained health producing resources. Central to this pursuit is evaluating costs of care, improving patient outcomes, and designing an efficient and equitable system of healthcare.

States including Rhode Island have recently engaged stakeholders to create and maintain State All Payer Claims Databases (APCDs) as a means to monitor, evaluate, and control rising health care costs. My thesis involves analytic work of healthcare claims data from the Rhode Island APCD from 2016-18 to identify trends and drivers of cost in RI professional services. Professional service cost drivers are understood in terms of spending across provider type, provider specialty, service categories, and individual claim codes.
