Migration and Human Security is an interdisciplinary concentration focusing on the overlap of nation, ‘legality’, and migration from the comparative perspectives of the social sciences and the humanities, specifically sociology, anthropology, history, development, international and public affairs, and political science to examine the causes of migration and the ways in which identity is shaped by the migrant experience, the notion of borders, and discourse about migrants in the media. In addition, Migration and Human Security takes the study of migration from the ideological to the pragmatic, exploring challenges related to migration and mass displacement from a human security perspective – with a special focus on putting people and communities at the center of attention – to develop skills and ideate real, actionable solutions with the purpose of relieving migrant suffering and forced displacement.
For my senior thesis, I focus on migrant women, a group that is distinctively vulnerable for their identity as both migrants and women. This research centers migrant women as a case study of a historically marginalized and racialized population within the American cultural matrix created by populism that we know. My research specifically explores the way the lives and livelihoods of migrant women are shaped by scapegoat politics as a result of a persistent and normalized culture of racism and white patriarchal ethnocentrism.
