About Departmental Undergraduate Groups (DUGs)

A Departmental Undergraduate Group (DUG) is a group of concentrators and prospective concentrators led by upperclassmen concentrators (DUG leaders) who meet throughout the year in order to create a sense of community through organized events, peer advising, and strengthening relationships within the concentration.

In 2017-18, there were 65 active DUGs and 157 DUG leaders across campus. DUG Coordinators Alexis and Yuna organized a training for DUG leaders, and the DUG Coordinators distributed a survey to them at the end of the fall.

DUG leaders dedicated their time and efforts into organizing a variety of events as well as collaborating across concentrations to celebrate the value of cross-departmental

connections. For instance, in November, the Cognitive Science, Cognitive Neuroscience, Linguistics, and Psychology Concentration DUG leaders hosted a CLPS department-wide social kickoff event which attracted over 80 undergraduate concentrators, prospective concentrators, graduate students, and faculty.

In the spring, some DUG leaders met with President Paxson to inform her of their work and interest in departmental DIAP goals. In addition, leaders had an opportunity to meet with members of the Brown Corporation during their on-campus meetings in February and May.

Some DUG and Concentration advisors hosted a Concentration Declaration Day (CDD) event in April or May to welcome new concentrators to their respective departments; see the CDD link for a list of participating concentrations this year.
